Lust For Lie

As said on many reviews and posts earlier, year 2009 has been phenomenal for finnish hardcore scene with amazing new albums and firts releases on numerous bands. Also Lighthouse Project has now got their new 7" out, they departed ways with their label Combat Rock Industry shortly after the release of their last 7" / DVD -set Misanthropic Humanist, but found quickly a new home under the wings of The Hood Took Us Under Records. Already putting out a great 7" as their first release with Eye For All's "S/T" 7", THTUUR return now with Lighthouse Project's brand new Lust For Lie 7". As i mentioned on my last LHP review, i've been following Lighthouse Project from the scratch, heard their first pre-demo training tapes, all the way to their first LP, to the latest 7". It's been awesome to see the band evolve their music through every release. From fast and agressive hardcore punk band, LHP have gone a long road to become a band that combines still that same energy they had right from the start with influences they've gained through every release, always bringing something new to the mix.

Lust For Lie features three songs, two news originals and one cover, with they again, bring something fresh in.
Cruel Intentions starts A-side with overwhelming heaviness and really an overall dark atmosphere on the lyrics. There's so much diversity and elements added to "the heavier" sound they brough in on Gift LP and continued on Misanthropic Humanist 7", but they have gone even further to adding also faster guitar runs, i think that LHP is here heavier than ever, emotionally and musically. Definitely a weird comparasion, but what the hell, i'd say that actually Cruel Intentions and the other new song, Choosing My Confessions do both have same kind of feeling with new Kickback album, No Surrender, intentional? Maybe not, but what the fuck i'm into this and that is what matters to me. Only thing i haven'w now mentioned of Lust For Lie is the cover that they got as second song on side A, it's a finnish hardcorepunk song from legendary band, Terveet Kädet and LHP is performing their version of Musta Jumala on the 7". I'm sure Lighthouse Project is on the verge to find their own sound and hearing few songs live from their upcoming new lp, stuff is just getting heavier and i think it's a really good direction to go. Check out Lust For Lie 7" and fear not of the absence of record player, they have included a download cupon with the record, so pick it up. Cruel Intentions is featured on LHP's Myspace player so head there to hear it.

23.10.09 TVO: Alley Gods, Eye For All, The Phoenix Foundation

23.10.09 TVO, Turku - Alley Gods, Eye For All, The Phoenix Foundation

Another Poolside Party on another Friday night. It was of course a promise of a great show with these band on the bill: Alley Gods, Eye For All, The Phoenix Foundation and Naamiokostajat. Alley Gods played first since their second appearance as masked vigilantes was still to come as they would be also humor-football-punk band, Naamiokostajat, with some dude who was responsible for the whole music and lyrics on the project, they we're just his "background band" or something. AG played lots of new stuff including song called Drinking And Driving, so expect provocation and aim to piss as many people off they can in the future as well. Solid set in any way, they have been training a lot and you could hear it since it was probably technically their best set ever. I shot couple of pictures but couldn't just get right kind of adjustments as using flash and got pretty crappy ones, witch sucks. The Phoenix Foundation was next and since i hadn't seen them for a long time it was really nice to see them play. I've been into their new S/T LP a lots and i'd recommend it to any fan of melodic punkrock ala Leatherface, Hot Water Music and so on. They also got a new Split 7" coming up with Australian band Gifthorse and they played one song off it. Other material was mainly from their two LP's Falling and S/T. Good as well, little too short maybe, but nothing sort of great performance. Eye For All was playing as third band since Naamiokostajat was some kind of spectacle for the TPS Football -crowd that had come to see them. Good for Aku and Pirkka, cause they apparently got all their expenses covered quite well, there was relatively a lot people for a usual TVO show with no or one out-of-town bands. I hadn't seen Eye For All for a while also, i think last time was at Kindgom -show in Satama, Helsinki, where they played really short set due secret short performance of Rains, who got a part of their time to play couple songs. Having listened (and reviewed) Eye For All's new 7" i was excited to hear how the material would sound live. Their live performances have always been energetic and it has been great to see that their playing has also become really tight, not to say that it has been sloppy or anything, thought. Songs off the Ruttopuisto Straight Edge -Demo and 7" were heard, but they also threw in couple of new ones, witch sounded good, more mosh apparently on the way. EFA played also solid show and it was nice to see them after a long time. Only thing that sucked was that they didn't cover Fury Of Five...

No Escape

Honesty, i really don't know much more of this band that Karsa, who used to play drums in old school hardcore band Last Laugh and nowdays plays drums for another hardcorepunk band, Urban Unrest, used to play in this called Drop Forged, that hailed from city of Kuopio. I got this demo from Jukka, who played back in the days in many Turku area bands like; Falling In Cycle and Avoid Eye Contact, but also played in Unloyal and nowdays drums in Turku's best melodic punkrock band, The Phoenix Foundation. While i bought bunch of older cd's with some cd-r demos, i also got Drop Forged's No Escape Demo. It would be great if someone who used to play in the band or knew them during the days they were active and where they are now, could shed some light on it.

Drop Forged's demo contains four tracks, very much similar vein with band that i suppose were active around same time, there is no year or date on the demo. I'd compare them strongly with Resort To Force, whose demo about i wrote about and definitely one of my all time favourite finnish hardcore bands, Death From Above. Obviously the stuff was influenced on heavier hardcore that was coming big together in finland around late 90's and start of 2000 and probably also many haeavier bands that came to tour finland those days like Cold As Life, Blood For Blood and All Out War, to mention few. So the main point was clearly to make damn heavy hardcore and Drop Forged does it quite well. Title track No Escape starts up the demo and right away the deeper, bit growled vocals remind me of Death From Above. There's also bit quite metallic riffing on next song What Goes Around
and i think that this kinda stuff could also sound like how Cutdown used to sound around their Kontula Style demo and first mcd Invincible. Third song In Cold Blood is a bit faster one, but offers up that nice mid paced heavy riffing, with a classic heavy mosh on end. Day By Day is the last song and brings back the DFA sound again with thick and heavy driving guitars that turns into slower chorus, that jumps back into faster verse part. All the songs are pretty good and sounds aren't bad at all, so i'm really interested to hear if anyone has any knowledge about Drop Forged, did they ever do more releases than this demo and was there more bands coming from Kuopio or was this the only KDSCrew band.

03.10.09 Pori & 04.10.09 Helsinki - Providence, Ratface, No One Is Safe, Breamgod, Third Man Down

03.10.09 Baarikaappi, Pori - Providence, Ratface, No One Is Safe, Breamgod

Second show on Providence - Ratface - No One Is Safe -tour, that started last friday and ends on sunday in Helsinki. I was excepting a great show, witch it indeed was and it was cool to see everyone from Get Stitches! at Pori also, they played in Lappeenranta with all the other bands and came now with them straight to Pori to hang out. Local support here was beartown's own juggernaut, Breamgod who also started the night by playing first. Breamgod is always great to see and they delivered a killer set here as well, some old ones like Death's Certain, Life's Not and Revenge Is Sweet with newer stuff from Building The Legacy 2 -compilation with Sinking Ship. They also played few even newer songs, two if i remember right, didn't catch names but shit sounded good as usual. Next up was No One Is Safe, who i've hadn't a chance to see for a long time and was really looking forward to. N1IS ruled for sure, they started with Family First -off Building The Legacy 2 -comp and played mostly new stuff through the whole set. Older songs included No One Is Safe and Willing To Bleed. They also suprised me by covering Next Step Up's song Hardcore, witch was awesome choice on cover song. It was really great to see No One Is Safe again and i hope to see more of them playing around and hearing some new material recorded soon. Ratface was up next and they played good set, as always. All the hits from Demon Dayz and their 7" were played, they are in progress to write up stuff for their upcoming full-length on Fullhouse Records, so be on the look for that. Providence took their time gearing up and even it seemed that some of the people at Baarikaappi had already vanished somewhere, when the French gentlemen started their set, all looked pretty damn nice. Everyone was pumped and mosh was very present throughtout Providence's whole set. Mostly concentrating on material from their new mcd on Rucktion Records, Far Beyond Our Depth, Providece also played Turn The Tide, that was available as a single song demo on these shows. Providence truly provided us a fucking killer show, that's the stuff you just want to mosh for, no excuses, haha. I've been in contact with TonR of Providence for few years now through internet and he has provided me some awesome shirts and record in the past, so it was really great to see the dude finally in real life as well. Everything was real good this evening and even we got back to Turku about 03:30 in sundy morning, the plans were already made to follow the tour next day to Helsinki, where it would be Providence, Ratface and No One Is Safe -tour's last stop.

04.10.09 Oranssi, Helsinki - Providence, Ratface, No One Is Safe, Third Man Down

Helsinki show was at Oranssi, that these days resides in more or less abandoned-looking-like warehouse on a industrial district, it's a small basic concrete hall, that is on the other hand perfect for hardcore shows. Weather outside was horrible and our drive to there was pain because bit malfunctioning car and constant heavy rain. Eventually we got the the venue, fearing we'd miss Third Man Down, who we're the local support at this last stop of the tour. Luckily we had gotten there just in time and got in before TMD had started playing. It's been a while since i've seen Third Man Down and also it's been a while since they have played a show, so it was great to see them play some new songs as well. They got some kind of new release coming up sometime, but i don't know too much about it yet. Here they delivered theri brand of heavy, chugging hardcore, that doesn't lack any hyper-fast parts either. Solid stuff as always. Next up was No One Is Safe, who played pretty much same set like last night, but little variation on song order, tiredness of touring hadn't gotten them bad at all and they put on a good show again. Ratface hit up after them and their set also followed last night's set. There weren't that many people around, only a handful of people, that sucked. It seems that heavier style of more beatdown releted hardcore isn't that popular around here any more, like it was few years back. Anyway Providence pulled a great show again and those who bothered even had fun moshing and throwing shit around. Those guys came from France to play some shows and i hope they had good time, it seems so basing on what i heard about Lappeenranta show and seeing Pori show myself, Helsinki was a bit let down because lack of attendance, but what can you do, everyone can't like everything and you just can't go to see all the shows around. It was a good trip to see our friends in all the bands and finally meeting TonR and seeing his band play, big props for Timo of No One Is Safe, who had booked and arranged the whole tour!

25.09.09 Oranssi, Helsinki "Ill Omen 7" Record Release Part 2"

25.09.09 Oranssi, Helsinki "Ill Omen 7" Record Release Show"

So this show was the second of two Ill Omen 7" rec release shows. We had 25 pcs of rec release covers that were sold about half and half on Turku and Helsinki -shows, most of you probably knew this thought. Anyways about the show, it didn't start so good for us at least, i got out of work on 16:00 and we packed up and headed to Helsinki about 17:00. Ride took about two hours and it sucked since the showtime at Oranssi was half 7 and we arrived somewhat near 7. So that ment we missed You Can't Keep Me Down who played first, that sucks but at least i saw 'em week before on Turku record release. I sat down and set up IO distro, met many of our friends and hung out 'till Anvils Drop played. AD originally hailed from Turku also, but now some it's members are living in Helsinki as well. I've seen 'em few times and then they sounded more like fast, agressive hardcore in vein of American Nightmare. There was lots of improvement on AD's music as far based on this night's show since they had brought lot of slower parts and trying to create even post-rockish, heavy and repeating parts on their newer stuff. All in all their set sounded much better than ever and even i didn't really get into their AD/HC -Demo, i'm interested how the upcoming 7" will sound like, it's coming out from our boys, Poolside Records, sometime soon. After AD it was time for last In One Piece show ever, they put out a split 7" with Germany's Sink Or Swim (who by the way are also breaking up, what is happening...?), but now they we're letting the band to reat due personal issues or something. IOP played solid set, stuff from their Demo to the Split 7" and new songs, that now aren't going to appear anywhere sadly. It's a damn shame they had to put the band to rest, but what i've heard they already got a new band in the works, let's hope that'll be good stuff as well. In One Piece closed with straight edge anthem, Force Of Change by Strife. This far the crowd was pretty calm, just few kids moshing and we were up next. We played pretty much same set that we played in Turku, minus the TKU Blindside -cover. We had bit problem with drums since they seemed to slip out of Teemu's (our drummer) reach, but i think that the show went still reasonably well. Some dancing happened, mostly thought for our Death Threat cover, but special props to Max from Third Man Down for moshing everyone, witch was great, haha! As for the main event of the night was of course St. Hood, who everyone was certainly waiting for. They released their second full-length For The Dead awhile ago and i'd advise everyone to pick it up right away, truly a great record, check out review here. St. Hood delivered with raging energy as always, Oranssi's small storage-like room was easily full and kids were excited. Mostly playing material from the new album, didn't matter since everyone was really into the band whole time and everyoen was jumping on each other, smashing the pit from side to side almost throughtout the whole set. Amongst older songs from Sanctified were Solid Hate and my very favourite, Stonesoul as for new record they hit that damn good opener Bring Forth The War, Control and Can't Rise Above, to name few. But what crowned the night as perfect was when Sami spoke that they would play a song that has never been played or practiced, last song off For The Dead, Devils In Our Midst, as he welcomed Tom of Bolt and Kristian of Down My Throat to the stage. Rest of course, fucking epic shit since everyone went crazy, you can check out what happened below since someone did record the song through cellphone camera and the quality isn't that bad! This was really good night and i'm hoping to see soon new ex-In One Piece band and i have to give a huge thanks for Mirko for hooking the show up and everyone in the bands, YCKMD, AD, IOP and St. Hood. Now i got my mind already on the upcoming Providence shows this weekend, so see you everyone in Pori and Helsinki.

17.9. TVO, Tuku - Get Stitches!, You Can't Keep Me Down, Ronskibiitti

17.9. Ill Omen 7" Record Release: Get Stitches!, Ronskibiitti, You Can't Keep Me Down

Check out photos from bands mentioned from the link. I thought that it's been too long since i've put up any stories from shows so attachment to the photos i've been posting, i'll try to write up also some shit what was going on at the show.

This was last Thursday and it was first date on Ill Omen 7" release shows. Second one will be in 25.9. at Oranssi, Helsinki, but back to that night. Get Stitches!, Turku's heaviest in sound started up the evening with good set, that was rather short thought. At least one new song, that's featuring Oskari from Alley Gods on vocals, it's sounding really cool. I think they also played all the songs from their "All Hail Emptiness" 7", that is some seriously good shit, pick it up from our label (Poolside Records). Pirkka Poolside sold also Poolside Recs bags, that i think sold out, thought. Lohja's boys delivered up some serious beatdown next, You Can't Keep Me Down threw in a great show, as always i've seen them. Lots of stuff and of course shitloads of samples going on all throw the set. Too bad it was thursday and even there was quite well people around for a weeknight show in TVO, no dancing at all. Ill Omen (we) played next, i can't really say how it went, i think it was all right show, we put on TKU Blindside's "Watch You Fall" -cover and another cover we've been playing for a while now, Death Threat's "Dead At Birth". Also played all the songs on Ill Omen 7", one new one, "Dear Friends" and one old, "Cast Aside", from the demo, that we're probably going to ditch pretty soon as we get new songs in. We sold out on Turku batch of I.O. record release cover 7" and a good amount of new shirts (if you want one, there's few still left, available in Helsinki show). Last but not least was our friends (and tattooer), Ronskibiitti, a finnish hip-hop group who have been one of my favourite rap bands for years now. Huge thanks to everyoen who came around and i hope to see everyone in Helsinki as well, we're playing with the almighty St. Hood (Pick up "For The Dead"!), In One Piece (who are sadly playing their last show), You Can't Keep Me Down (our "tour" partners in crime) and Anvils Drop -also from Turku city.
